Welcome to aviationcardiology.co.uk I’m Dr Martin Thomas
Potential cardiovascular problems may be detected at your routine medical performed by your AME or on a routine electrocardiogram (ECG).
The CAA have specific requirements for the medical certification of pilots and ATCOs in relation to the cardiovascular system.
You may require further specialist assessment by a cardiologist who may need to arrange further investigations depending on the requirements of the Civil Aviation Authority. These tests include an ultrasound (echo) of your heart, an exercise ECG and a 24-hour monitor of your heart rhythm. If these tests are insufficient to exclude or diagnose a cardiovascular problem then more sophisticated tests may be required.
Dr Thomas is an expert in assessing your cardiovascular fitness to fly and has broad experience in the field of aviation cardiology as a consultant advisor to the CAA. Dr Thomas is a consultant cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre, London, one of the largest cardiovascular centres in Europe.
He can assess you at London Medical where all the initial investigations that you may require can be organised and a formal report will then be sent to the Authority Medical Section at the CAA.

Dr Thomas aims to help pilots to return safely to flying if possible but he ensures that the pilot’s personal health is his priority. To book an appointment please click here
